It appears that everyone and their uncle are agreeing that this barn find, found in Swansea, England, is one of the best finds ever. While I’m more of a Boss ‘9 in Kentucky kind of guy, I’ll agree that these low mileage rides are indeed quite cool. In order of built-for-homologation badness, there’s 1) a white 350+ horsepower AWD Ford RS200 road-going Group B rally car with 1,042 miles, 2) two first-gen E30 M3s – which, normally, would put out 195 horsepower – in red with 37 and 57 miles on them, and 3) a blue 232 horsepower Mercedes 190 E 2.5-16 Evolution II.

Both red racers and the Benz were built so BMW and Mercedes could compete in Group A Touring, while the RS200 was made street-able so Ford could put people into the rally ring during the hairy-chested Group B years.

No offense to Michèle Mouton fans, there, but she’s manlier than most people reading (and writing) this.

Ford Escort Mexico MK I

We recently spent a day in the company of Ford blatting around the Cambridgeshire countryside in a selection of their latest metal. We’ve already done a review of the Focus RS and there will be more to come in the next week or two. But Ford very obligingly brought along an original MK I Escort Mexico for us to play with in amongst the modern metal. And how could we resist going to play for a happy hour or two?

The Escort Mexico was an affordable RS in all but name. Based on the same underpinnings as the RS 1600, the car was developed by Ford’s AVO at Aveley in Essex and was powered by a four-pot, pushrod 1.6 litre lump. It developed a massive 86bhp, took almost 11 seconds to get to 60mph and could manage 100mph downhill with a decent wind. But it felt so quick. I had huge fun in a friend’s Mexico back in the mid ’70s and remember it as nimble, quick and fun. A blast…

Americans still don’t really want small cars. What about hybrid pickup trucks? If only the F150 were a hybrid. Provide a lot of incentives for consumers to buy small and efficient cars and some will take advantage. Interest also rises with gas prices. No duh, right? Nonetheless, Americans don’t really want these vehicles according to BusinessWeek.

Instead, they want vehicles like the Ford F150, a vehicle that saw its first year on year increase in sales since 2006 according to recent data. In fact, Ford is lifting production on these vehicles, despite the horrific 15 – 17 mpg fuel economy of these pickup trucks.

Sure the Toyota Prius has been a hit and the plethora of plug-in vehicles on the horizon sound compelling, but what about solutions for the majority of Americans that want vehicles like the F150?
